[44] In 1745, New England militia mounted a campaign against the French fortress of Louisburg, on Cape Breton, and, to the surprise of even themselves, succeeded. Although there were not many casualties due to fighting, an epidemic spread through the troops and took the lives of many, both at Cape Breton and after they went home.
