ACCOUNT BOOK OF JOHN PYNCHON, JR.,

1669–1674

JOHN PYNCHON set up his son John as his agent at Boston in 1669 because he needed an agent there to handle shipments of furs to London and to receive and forward to Springfield such “European Goods” as he had ordered. Though diligent, the younger Pynchon did not prove very successful as a merchant.

The following selections actually come from the years 1671–1675. Although they are less complete than the father’s records, they do provide some useful details about the West Indian and Newfoundland trades. The ketch Sea Flower, in which young Pynchon was concerned, made six voyages to Barbados. To the Caribbean were shipped the standard staples of the trade: horses, flour, pork, codfish, and later lumber. On return voyages the ketch carried sugar, molasses, and rum, and when she touched at Jamaica, also logwood for John Hull of Boston. On another voyage Sea Flower sailed for Newfoundland to take on codfish. In 1672–1673 the Pynchons were concerned in the ketch Speedwell, which made two voyages to and from Ireland. Unfortunately the cargoes involved are not specified.
