II

THE WEST INDIES TRADE

A steady increase in purchases of goods from the British Isles forced New Englanders to cast about for additional sources for returns to supplement the beaver trade that began to decline in volume after 1657. They hoped to find a solution to their problem in the Caribbean islands.

Commerce between New England and the West Indies had becn opened little more than a decade when John Pynchon of Springfield and a group of Connecticut merchants, most of them family connections of his living at Hartford, undertook to open trade with Barbados. To this island they dispatched in vessels in which they owned shares such inland produce as wheat, pease, Indian corn, salt pork, and salt beef. They also shipped flour, ship’s biscuit (“bread”), lumber, and, by 1662, horses. Their captains or masters exchanged cargo for sugar and “cotton wool,” employing resident New England agents such as Peleg Sanford, a Rhode Island Quaker, to arrange their transactions.

Although they are far from complete or orderly, these accounts reveal the complexity of the trade. Here we find data about the purchase, voyages, and sale of the ketch Desire. Especially informative are the assembling and warehousing of cargoes at Hartford, the provisioning of Desire at Middletown, the dealings with the master, Giles Hamlin, and the gathering of the crew.

With “New England Money” borrowed from some men of Hadley in 1678, John Pynchon joined his Hartford associates and invested £100 in Cabbage Tree Plantation at Antigua.

That neither his shipping ventures nor the sugar plantation proved successful does not alter the fact that these accounts provide as complete a record as exists of colonial trade to the Caribbean during the second half of the seventeenth century.
