IX

MISCELLANEOUS ACCOUNTS

THIS section includes John Pynchon’s accounts with three “gentlemen” with whom he was intimately connected. Although he served his father as Boston agent, for the most part John Pynchon, Jr., traded alone—and not very successfully (see Section xiii for the years 1669–1674). The elder Pynchon evidently handled some shipments of wheat to Boston in 1655 for John Winthrop, Jr., and the next year dealt with him about a horse (see Pynchon Papers, I, 20). The dealings with “son Whiting,” who married Pynchon’s daughter and lived in Westfield, indicate that Josiah bought goods in Springfield in 1669–1670 which he traded to the Indians in that area for beaver. The accounts show in some detail that Whiting employed a number of craftsmen from Springfield to build his house at Westfield. One of them, John Stebbins, combined stringing wampum and shingling, and complained that for the shingling he had “a hard Bargaine.” Decently, his employer gave him an allowance for the extra work.
