PUBLIC DUTIES

IN a very real sense, during this half century John Pynchon seems to have led a life more public than private. He was always on call: as a magistrate, as the ranking military officer in the west, as a founder and often heavy investor in Valley towns, as a local official, as a boundary commissioner for “running the line,” as the principal member of the Springfield church, as an authority on the Indians, and as one of the leading broadcasters of news and intelligence in the Connecticut Valley. This group of accounts suggests the scope of his manifold services for the commonweal. Pynchon was both competent and willing to advance the public interest. Whether the task was trifling or great mattered not. We note that it might be the procuring and selling of red wine for communion at the church and drum heads, cords, and tassels for the trainband, or adjusting tax rates and levying and collecting fines for Hampshire County. Moreover, in these scrupulously kept accounts, where private and public transactions are intermingled, we sense that John Pynchon himself made little distinction between them. He was, as the Reverend Mr. Stoddard said in his funeral sermon, “one that has been a long while serviceable. . . . He hath had the principal management of our military affairs, and our civil affairs; and labored much in the settling of most of our plantations, has managed things with prudence and moderation.”
