VIII

ESSENTIAL OCCUPATIONS

ALMOST every adult inhabitant of Springfield, as well as more than a few people living in the villages and towns nearby, bought “European Goods” and necessary staples at retail from John Pynchon’s shop. Seldom did any money figure in the transactions. They paid for their purchases in goods and services, and the merchant generously extended credit to them—in some instances for years.

For this section the accounts of eight men and one woman have been selected. Four of them—the minister, schoolmaster, dame-school teacher, and physician—were among the most prominent members of the community, whereas the five remaining were craftsmen whose skills were required for the well-being and growth of the town. It has not been known previously that Dr. Daniel Denton lived and practiced in Springfield and served as physician to the Massachusetts soldiers in King Philip’s War. All of these townsfolk except Dame Mathews were also farmers. One is astonished to learn what a variety of “luxury items” John Pynchon kept on hand and eventually sold in a wilderness town.
