Chapter X
1771
FOR Marblehead the year 1771 was the beginning of a short breathing space between periods of disruption. New, burning issues failed to materialize. The one cause pursued by the town was to petition the Great and General Court for a lighthouse to be erected on Thacher’s Island off the northeastern shores of Cape Ann, two of which were accordingly built and the lights illuminated on the twenty-first of December.
During the last week of July a vessel, the fishing schooner Philip, returned to Marblehead from the banks of Newfoundland, having on board four men and two boys, two less than had sailed in her. It was soon established that the missing men were fisherman William Russell and the vessel’s skipper, Henry Florence. The crew let it be known that about a fortnight previously on a Saturday evening, after they had all eaten their supper of pork and boiled dumplings, both Russell and Florence had suddenly died; the former the next morning and the latter almost immediately after dining.
A number of alarmed Marblehead residents, led by Captain Thomas King, were dissatisfied with the all too glib account given out by the survivors. They therefore made a formal complaint, charging the crew with murder on the high seas and with throwing the bodies of their victims overboard. The men were brought before Nathan Bowen and Isaac Mansfield for interrogation on 3 August.
Russell, it appeared, had challenged Skipper Florence, or anyone else who dared, to see who could keep down the most New England rum. Florence, his pride at stake, accepted, whereupon a pint mug was filled for Russell, and he drank it off. The skipper then swallowed an equal quantity. Stalemate. Russell drained another pint, completing a quart consumed, and fell into a stupor. Florence called for his second mug, but before he could take it fell down dead. Russell “continued in a lethargic State” until morning when he, too, expired. No fault being found with the crew, therefore, except their attempt to cover up the true circumstances of the incident, they were released and the charges were dropped.
Toward the end of the year there appears to have been what amounted to a labor dispute between the fishermen and the owners of the fishing schooners. In December the fishermen published a notice in the Essex Gazette.
Whereas the Fishermen in Marblehead are dissatisfied with the Terms on which the Owners of Vessels there have agreed to employ them the ensuing Season—Any Merchants or Owners of Vessels as far Eastward as Portsmouth in New-Hampshire, or as far Southward as Plymouth in this Province, who may be in Want of faithful Skippers and good Crews, by making Enquiry at Marblehead, may be served to their Satisfaction.
The following week the Marblehead shipowners, aping the language of the fishermen’s notice, caused to be published one of their own.
Whereas the Fishermen in Marblehead decline engaging with the Merchants and Shoremen, on a fishing Voyage for the ensuing Year, on the just and equitable Method of Tell-Fish: Any Merchants as far Eastward as Portsmouth in New-Hampshire, or as far Southward as Plymouth in this Province, who may be in Want of a Number of fine Schooners, from 50 to 70 Tons, by making Enquiry at Marblehead, may be served to their Satisfaction.
This subtle threat apparently had the desired effect and the fishermen were brought to heel, sailing as usual at the end of the winter on their first fare of the season.
Ashley Bowen’s wife, Dorothy, died in mid-August of this year, after many months of illness, but in early December he had sufficiently recovered his composure to marry Mary, the widow of James Shaw, fisherman of Marblehead.
