Acknowledgments

This sixth volume of The Bernard Papers brings the series to a conclusion. The entire venture was rendered possible by the generous funding of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts since the outset and support for research leave provided by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council and the University of Stirling at key stages. The Bernard Papers project complements other documentary editions on the American Revolution Era published by the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, notably by John W. Tyler on Thomas Hutchinson, Neil Longley York on Henry Hulton, and Daniel R. Coquillette on Josiah Quincy Jr. I have benefited enormously from their expertise. Together, I hope we have enhanced the research resources for the history of the Revolution’s onset. Publication in open access digital editions has certainly enabled worldwide access to these materials. Colleagues in the UK and US have been generous with their time and gracious in their advice. I am indebted to Owen Dudley Edwards and Dr. Stuart Salmon, who have been involved since 2001, and to book designer Jeanne Abboud. My lasting gratitude to all the research assistants who contributed to transcription, fact-checking, and proof-reading over the years: Dr. Christopher Minty, who is now a documentary editor, Dr. Jamie Macpherson, Scott Bird, Robyn Leith Stewart, and Kristen Nicolson. Colleagues David Bebbington, Frank Cogliano, Emma Macleod, Ben Marsh, George Peden, Gyorgy Toth, Jim Smyth, Shaun Wallace, and the editorial team of the Adams Family Papers contributed in numerous ways. My sincere thanks also to the archivists and librarians of the British Library, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, Houghton Library, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the Massachusetts Archives, the UK National Archives, the National Library of Scotland, Staffordshire Record Office, the University of Stirling, and the William L. Clements Library of the University of Michigan. I am especially grateful to Joanna Terry, Head of Archives and Heritage at Staffordshire County Council, and Tabitha Driver, Archives Cataloguer, Modern Archives and Manuscripts, at the British Library.

Permission to publish material from the following collections is herewith acknowledged: the Egerton manuscripts, by the British Library Board; the private collections of Robert Spencer Bernard; the Dartmouth Papers, Staffordshire Record Office, by permission of the Earl of Dartmouth; the Charles Steuart Papers, National Library of Scotland; the Massachusetts Archives Collection, courtesy of the Massachusetts Archives.

My last debts are the greatest: to my dear wife Catherine and my wonderful daughters, Catriona and Kristen.
