    New York July 9th: 1769.

    Sir,

    I have received your’s of the 3d. Inst:,1 with a Letter inclosed for Mr: Pownall, which shall be forwarded to England by the first opportunity. General Mackay has wrote to me concerning your opinion,2 in which both he and the Commodore have joined, upon the present Situation of Affairs. I answer the General by this opportunity in a manner I hope agreeable to your Sentiments respecting the dangerous Appearance Affairs wear at present, and have recommended Secrecy to him respecting his orders.
