[186] 1795 Chh Records & Votes continued from Page 9327
July 26th Lords day Evening. Read a letter missive from the Church in the South Parish in Hallowed, on Kennebeck River, requesting the Presence & Assistance of this Chh in Council at the Ordination of Mr Eliphalet Gillet, appointed to be on the 12th of August next. The Church thereon Voted to comply with the request, & chose Thomas Wethrell Junr a Delegate to represent the Chh on the Occasion.
The Pastor & Delegate accordingly attended on sd 12th of August when Mr Eliphalet Gillett was solemnly ordained over the sd Chh in Hallowell — On which Occasion the Revd Mr Emerson of George town made the first Prayer The Pastor of this Church preached the Sermon, from 2 Cor. 6.1: “We then, as Workers together with him, beseech you also, that ye recieve not ye Grace of God in vain.”28 The Revd Mr Gilman of North Yarmouth made the Ordaining Prayer Revd Dr Hemmenway of Welles, gave the Charge Revd Mr Anderson of ye 2d Chh in No Yarmouth, the concluding Prayer Revd Mr Bradford of Pownalborough, (Wiscassett) the Right Hand of fellowship.
Novr 8th A day to be remembered by this Church! — for at this time it being Lord’s Day, & the day of our Communion, At the Close of the Exercises in the Afternoon, This Church did, in the first place, agreably to the Vote passed (Page 9329) after hearing it read, publickly manifest their Assent to the Confession of Faith recorded Page 92d & 3d,30 by rising, all. from their Seats. After which, standing up, in ye presence of God and the Congregation, the whole Chh, male & female, did in a solemn manner, publickly renew their Covenant with God & one another; (after the example of this antient Chh in the days of our Fore Fathers) on which Occasion, a Sermon, adapted for the Solemnity, was preached by the Pastor, from Exod: 19. 5th & 8th Verses. “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed & keep my Covenant, then ye shall be unto me a peculiar Treasure above ad people.” “And all the people answered together & said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do; And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord.” A more solemn & affecting season, can hardly be imagined than this was, both to the members of the Chh & to the Congregation. The good Lord enable us to “obey his voice & keep his Covenant;” And bless the solemn transaction as a means, to excite this Chh to a more watchful, humble, prayerful, holy & exemplary Walk & Conversation, agreable to covenant Engagements we are under — & to promote greater Love, Peace & Unity among Brethern — as well as for the awakening & Conversion of Others, that seeing our good works, they may glorify our Father who is in Heaven. O that this antient Chh — a precious Vine [18731] which God planted with his own hand, & has wonderfully preserved to this day, & has of late greatly encreased, (blessed be his great name!) may, to the latest Posterity, be as a City set on a hill, & exhibit an Example of Primitive Purity in Faith & Practice! That God would pour out his Spirit on us & our Children — add to the Number & Graces of this Chh that he may have a godly Seed to serve him, & to vindicate the honor of his Truth & Name, to the second coming of Christ — At which glorious day — O may all the members of this flock, with multitudes who may yet be joined to it, find their names written in Heaven!

Lord’s day Evening Janry 24th 1796. Notifyd the Brethren to meet in Conference, next Wednesday P M, at Deacon Biman’s, being the Semiannual Meeting previous to the Contribution for ye poor of ye Chh & Congregn agreabl to Vote & notified that the sd Contribution would be next Sabbath. Page 91.32
Wednesday, Janry 27th The Church met accordingly at the house of Deacon Diman, & after Prayer, entered upon a Conference on the Subject of Discipline, agreably to the Design of this Semiannual Meeting. One of the Brethren mentioned the Conduct of our Brother Jesse Churchill, as being 233 so irregular & unchristian 134 in several respects, as that it has given great Grief & Offence to the Church in general, & brôt much Reproach on Religion, by opening the mouths of others to despise it & the Professors of it, by his means. Particularly, that instead of preserving “a good Report among them that are without,” it is the common Report that he addicts himself to an Intemperate Use of Strong Drink. For which things he has been repeatedly talkd with, in a private way, by several of the Brethren individually — Also by three or four, afterwards, who have mentioned this thing to him, & pleaded with him, & used every christian Argument to diswade him from a Practice so dishonoring to God & Religion, wounding to the Church, & hurtful to himself — but to no purpose, as the common Report, of late grows worse respecting him. The Church, at this meeting, endeavor’d to convince him of his error, by pointing out a variety of instances in which he had offended, on the score of Intemperate35 use of strong Liquors — & reminding him of the opprobrious & reproachful Speeches that were made publickly, concerning him, on that account — But he continues notwithstanding, to deny, & to refuse making any Christian Acknowledgment or to manifest Repentance for his conduct — The Church after he withdrew, conversed further upon it, & then came to ye followg Votes
Vote 1. Voted, (in order to give sd Brother Jesse Churchill, further time for Reflection) to adjourn this Meeting for a Fortnight, to meet at Deacon Diman’s
Voted 2. That Brother Jesse Churchill be notifyd by the Pastor, that unless he shall then appear to stand ready to make christian Adknowledgment by confessing his Sin, & humbling himself before God & his Brethren, he will [18836] then be suspended from the Com̄union of this Church.
The Meeting was then closed by Prayer — to meet again at Deacon Diman’s by Adjournment Febry 10th 1796, Wednesday, 2 ’Clock P M.
Febry 10th 1796 Wednesday, P M. This Church met, agreably to Adjournment, at Deacon Diman’s — had much Conversation with Brother Jesse Churchill, & much pains was taken in christian Love, to convince him of the Duty & Importance of his making christian Acknowledgment, in the Case now under Consideration — At length, he produced, & read a paper, which he called “a few words to say” — but as it imply’d rather a Denial of the two particular charges alledged against him, than any acknowledgment — The Church Voted unanimously, that it was not satisfactory — some further Arguments were then used with him, for conviction — but proving in vain — It was then moved, & Voted that a Committee of five, be chosen, to converse with him, & use further Endeavors to perswade him to comply with the Desires of his Brethren, by exhibiting such Tokens of Humility & Penitence, as are reasonably expected from one in his Situation — & report to the Church, at their next Meeting. The Committee chosen, were The Pastor — Brethren Deacon Crombie, Deacon Spooner, John Cobb & Ichabod Morton. The Meeting was then, by Vote, adjourn’d for a fortnight, to meet at our Brother, Doctor Rosseter Cotton’s, on Wednesday 24th Febr instant, at 2 Clock P. M. The Meeting, as usual was begun & concluded by Prayer.

Vote
Wednesday. Feb. 24th The Chh met, agreable to Adjournment at Doctr Cotton’s — And after some Conversation, concluded to postpone the Matter under Consideration, respecting our Bror Jesse Churchill, as he was called to go out of town & was absent on a Journey — & the Pastor was desired to notify ye Chh anew, in public, on Churchill’s Return, after ye Com̄ittee have conversed with him, as above proposed. So concluded with Prayer — & adjourned without Day.
Lords day Mar. 20th Notifyd the Chh to meet at Doctr Cotton’s on Tuesday next, to recieve the Report of the Com̄ittee who had conversed with Jesse Churchill on the Subject above recorded.
Tuesday. Mar. 22d The Chh met accordingly at our Bror Doctr Cotton’s, & the Committee reported that they had labor’d the matter with our Brother Churchill, to bring him to a Sense of his Duty, & give Christian Satisfaction to his Brethren — but to no satisfactory purpose — But as he is again absent on a Journey, concluded on nothing decisive in his Case, but to wait his coming home. He left behind him a paper purportg to be a kind of Acknowledgment, but in such Terms that ye Chh voted unanimsly not to accept it. Adjd after Prayer, to no fixd time, to be notifyd in publick.
Vote
Lords day April 24th Stay’d the Chh at Evening, & agreed, & so notifyd them to meet at the Pastor’s house tomorrow, Afternoon, to consider further what Steps are proper to be taken with our Brother Jesse Churchill.
Monday P M, April 25th The Chh met accordingly — And after Prayer, conversed in a friendly, serious manner, on the Affair of Jesse Churchill — & after much Deliberation, it appearing, from a great deal of his conduct of late, & from the account which his Neigbors & his own family, give of him, that he is in a degree deranged in mind, & his Senses, at times, disordered. The Chh Voted That inasmuch as our Brother Jesse Churchill does appear to be, at times, disordered in his Senses, it is not proper to act on his Case at present, & therefore the Church do suspend further proceedings upon it, merely on that Account, & untill a suitable opportunity, & regular State of his mind may appear. Concluded, as usual with Prayer.
Vote
July 17th Lords day Evening, Notifyd the Chh & Congregation that the Semi annual Contribution would be next Sabbath — The Chh were also Notifyd to meet, agreable to custom, on Wednesday next, at the Pastors house, (previous to the Constribution) at 4oClock P M, to consider any matters relative to Discipline, yt might come before them.
Wednesday. July 20th The Brethren met at ye Pastors house, but by reason of the weather, being very rainy — so few mett, that it was thôt proper to adjourn the Meeting to next Week, Wednesday P M, at the Meetinghouse — So after Prayer — broke up.
Lords day July 24th Stayed the Brethren, after divine Service at Evening, & proposed to them, that the Chh Meetg, which was adjourned to Wednesday this Week be on Thursday at 4 Clock, at the Meetinghouse, if agreable to them, as it would be more convenient to ye pastor, on some Accts, which was agreed to.
Thursday July 28. The Chh met at the Meetinghouse — but so few in Number, on Acct of the exceeding busy time of year — it was concluded & Voted, to adjourn the Consideration of the Subject now in hand respectg our Bro Jesse Churchill, to another Meeting, to be notifyd by ye pastor, about the beginning of Septr next.
Vote
Lord’s day. Sepr 11. 1796. The Chh was stayed after divine Service at Night, agreably to the above Vote, & there being a full Meetg of the Brethren, it was the opinion of the Chh, that the affair, respecting our Bro Jesse Churchill might better be considered & determined now, than to appoint another Meeting for it, as there probably, might not be so large a Number at another meeting — And considering Brother Churchill has had a long time for Reflection — and has been here since his Removal to Harvard, made a long Visit — transacted business with many people in the town in which there was no appearance of his being [190]37 being deranged in his mind, — but instead of appearing more disposed to make his peace with the Chh, by christian Acknowledgment of his faults, he appeared on the other hand, more obstinate, & added insults, both to the Pastor & the Church — Wherefore this Chh thought it their Duty, to con firm the Vote past on the 27th of Jany last, & did accordingly, with great unanimity, Vote That our Brother Jesse Churchill be suspended from this Church, & from all communion in special ordinances untill he shall appear penitent, & make christian Satisfaction to them by a suitable acknowledgment of those38 Faults, which have given occasion of Grief & offence to his brethren.
Vote
May God follow this Discipline with his Blessing, & make it a means of bringing him to Repentance, “that his Spirit may be saved in the Day of the Lord”!
Octr 25th By ye Special Desire of Rufus Robbins, a Number of the Chh met at his house, he being sick, (he dyd the week following) at which time he solemnly covenanted with God & professed his faith in Christ, he had been publickly propounded, & his Relation read before viz Octr 9th — but growing weak so fast, & apprehending he shod never be able to attend in publick, the Chh recd him as above, as individuals, & on the Sabbath following, Octr 30th, The Church being stayd, were made acquainted with the transaction, & approved it, & Voted him a Member in full Communion with this Church. He deceased on Monday following.
Febr 24th 1797. Died that aged & good Servant of God, Deacon Jonathan Diman, who has used the Office of a Deacon well & much to the acceptance of this Chh for a Number of Years. “The memory of ye Just is blessed.”
April 2d Lords day Evening, Notifyd the Chh to meet, on39 Tuesday next P M, immediately after the Quarterly Concert, for the Choice of a Deacon, (in the Room of our late worthy Deacn Diman deceased) if the Chh shod think proper then to come to a Choice.
Tuesday, 4th April. The Chh met accordingly, but it being a public, military day & many of the younger brethren necessarily absent, The Meeting was adjourned to next Monday, 4 Clock P M. But on an Occasion of such Importance, the Chh being met, united in Prayer to God for his Presence & Direction in the Choice Continued in Page 217.40

Vote 2d The Chh being then called upon to give in their Votes, it appear’d that our Brother John Bishop was elected to that Office, by a very large Majority— Whereupon, it was moved to know whither the Chh were willing to make the Choice unanimous, & they very readily complied, and
Voted 3d That it is the unanimous Choice of the Church.
The Meeting was concluded with Prayer, & with Thanksgiving to the great head of the Chh, for disposing the Minds of the Church, in so much Love, Harmony and Unanimity, to the Choice of this Officer in this Church — May God direct & incline his heart to comply with the Desire of his Brethren, & enable him to discharge the Duties, & “use the Office of a Deacon well”!
May 21st A Letter missive was read to this Chh from ye first Chh in Boylston requesting their Attendance by the Pastor & Delegates, at the Ordination of Mr Ward Cotton (of this town) on the 7th of June next. The Chh voted a Compliance & chose Deacon Spooner & Brother Rosseter Cotton, their Delegates. — &
June 7th The Pastor with Brother Rosseter Cotton, attended in Council, with 12 other Churches, at Boylston, & after Examination of the Pastor Elect & other preparatory Requisites — proceeded to the Ordination. Revd Mr Holcomb of Sterling opened with Prayer. The Pastor of this Chh preached, from “Go thou and preach the Kingdom of God.”59 Revd Mr Sumner of Shrewsbury made the ordaining Prayer Revd Mr Whitney of Northbury, the Charge Revd Mr Avery of Holden, the prayer after the Charge, & Revd Mr Bancroft of Worcester, ye Right hand. May their Pastor be one, truly & eminently, according to God’s own Heart!
Ordinn of Ward Cotton.
June 30th At the earnest Desire of Rebecca Bartlett, Wife of Elkanah Bartlett Junr The Pastor, & a Number of the Chh, & others, met at her house, & she, being in a languishing State, & having no prospect of being ever able to go out again did, at this time, solemnly confess Christ before Men & witness a good profession of her faith, & the Reason of her hope — entered into Covenant, & was then baptizd, the Brethren manifesting their free consent, as individuals Rebecca Bartlett recd to Covt & baptizd in private of ye Chh, the transaction to be laid before the Chh, for their consent & confirmation.— Accordgly [21860] Accordingly, on Lords day July 2d the foregoing proceedings were laid before the Chh, &, agreable to their Practice before, in such singular Cases, the Chh very readily & unanimously voted a Consent & Confirmation of what was done, & voted, accordingly to recieve her, viz Rebecca Bartlett as a Member of this Church.
Rebecca Bartlett recd to Covt & baptizd in private
Augst 10th I think it not improper to record in this place, with Gratitude, one of the most remarkable, & astonishing Events that has taken place among us, and the most surprizing Deliverance, viz On raising a New frame for a house, two Stories high, & 3 on the back side, (belonging to Capt Jno Paty) when they had finished it, it fell all at once, with, between 30 & 40 persons on it, (most of them on the top or highest floor) down to the Ground — but thrô the wonderful, and almost miraculous Interposition of God’s Providence, not one person killd — thô 21 recieved wounds — yet most of them not bad — & but one, whose bones were fractured. May this Instance of divine, signal Salvation make a suitable & lasting Impression on the minds of all of us, particularly on those who were Subjects of this great Deliverance!
A Remarkl Providence recorded.
Septr 22d The Chh met at the Pastor’s house, being notifyd the last Lords day, being the Semiannual Meeting or Conference — After Prayer, conversed with much christian Unanimity & Love, on several things which relate to the Order, Peace, purity & Welfare of the Chh & its Members. — At this meeting also the Chh, for special reasons urging thereto,61 came to ye following
Vote. Voted, unanimously, that this Chh view it as an Evil Practice & not to be tolerated, for any of its Members to play at Cards, or any way encourage the same.
1798. Lords day Febr 11th Notifyd the Chh to meet at a Semiannual Conference at the pastor’s house, on Wednesday next — The Contribution for the poor to be (as usual) the Sabbath following.
Also Stayd the Chh after Service, when, after some. Conversation, & information given that our Sister Rebecca Stephenson was now in town, from Portland, & an Opportunity presented for enquiring into some scandalous Reports concerning her Conduct & Character, the [219] Church voted to choose a Committee of three to go & discourse with her on the Subject & report to the Chh, on Wednesday — She being confind by indisposition. — The three Deacons, Crombie, Spooner & Bishop, were accordingly chosen.

Febr 14th The Chh met agreably to Notification, & after prayer to God, entered into a free & full Conversation respecting the unhappy Affair of our Sister Stephenson — The Committee, appointed to go & discourse with her made a Report to ye Chh, that they had conversed with her, that she acknowledged herself guilty, & appeared penitent & sorrowful — but some circumstances attending the affair, prevented their having such Satisfaction, in all respects, as could be wished. On the whole, the Chh, after long conversation, in a Candid, free & affectionate manner, with concern for the honor of Religion, & yet with much christian Tenderness, towards the delinquent member,
Rebecca Stephensons Case
They Voted, That our Sister Stephenson be suspended, for ye present, from Communion with this Chh in special Ordinances, on account of62 her indecent, loose, lascivious & unchristian Behavior, on a Voyage to Portland, in 1794 — untill further proper Enquiry be made, & information recieved from Portland, respecting her general Behavior & Conversation since that Affair; that the Chh may know whither she hath exhibited not only the profession of, but fruits meet for, & evidential of Repentance.
Vote.
Voted, that the Pastor be requested to write to persons in Portland who63 may be able to give such information as ye Chh desire.
Vote.
And voted to adjourn this Meeting four Weeks, for that purpose, & if needful, that ye Pastor be desired to adjourn still further, untill Intelligence shall be obtained — & give notice of it on a Lord’s Day. — The Meeting was very harmonious, & the Chh entirely united in their proceedings at this time, & hope we had ye presence of Christ on the Occasion.

Lords day. March 11th Notifyd the Chh, that I had not yet obtained ye information from Portland, that was expected, & therefore, that ye meeting of ye Chh is further postponed, from Wednesday next, (ye day to which it stands adjourned) to a future day, notice to be given on a Lord’s day previous to ye Chh’s Meeting.
Aprl 1 Lord’s Day Evening. Notifyd the Chh that, having recieved several Letters from persons in Portland, in answer to those sent by the Chh for Information of the Character & Conduct of our Sister Stephenson, that they meet next Thursday, (being fast Day) in the Afternoon, in the Meeting house, to recieve the Communications on this Subject.
[22064] 1798 Church Transactions & Records continued
The Church met accordingly, in the Meetinghouse, but on acct of the Coldness of the Season, adjourned to the Schoolhouse. The Meeting opened with Prayer — After which, the Pastor read those Com̄unications, he had received, from various Persons in Portland, of good Character & several of ’em Public Professors of Religion, & persons with whom Mrs Stephenson had lived, i.e. under their Roof. Some of these letters were very full & clear, all of ’em in general, testified to her having been guilty of Intemperance, & frequently seen intoxicated with strong Drink — & attended too with some peculiar Aggrevations, such as being on Sabbath Days &c &c, that this has been her habitual Practice for some years. — After hearing the sad Detail of this awful Affair— The Chh, penetrated with Grief & great Surprize — conversed in a very tender, christian manner upon the Subject — & considering how much Noise the Affair has made abroad, what mockings, & Reproachings of Religion it has caused; & what dreadful Dishonor is hereby done to the blessed Redeemer & his Cause — They came to ye following Votes, unanimously, & at a very full Meeting. — viz
Vote 1st That our Sister Rebecca Stephenson be publickly Admonished for her notorious Wickedness, in living in Intemperance, in Addition to her other Crime, on a Voyage to Portland mentioned in the last Page.
Vote 2d That if, thrô bodily Indisposition or any other Cause she should not be able to recieve it in publick, Voted that she have the Admonition communicated to her in private, at her house, & that, in such case, The Pastor be desired to read the same afterwds in public agreable to that Text, “Them that Sin65 rebuke before all that others also may fear.”
Voted 3th That the Pastor & three Deacons, Crombie, Spooner, & Bishop, be a Committee to communicate the Admonition to her, if it be to be done in private, for the reasons before mentioned.
Vote 4th That our Brethren Ebenezer Nelson & John Cobb be desired to acquaint our Sister Stephenson with these Doings of ye Chh & that unless she give proper Evidence of Repentance & Reformation, & thereupon make a humble, public Confession of her Sins, the Church must proceed to the painful, thô necessary Act of Excommunicating her from the visible Chh of Christ. Which, may the Lord in Mercy prevent, for his Son’s Sake Amen! After Prayer, adjournd without Day.
[22366] 1798 Records continued.
Lords day April 22d After divine Service in the Afternoon, the Pastor, according to beforemention’d Vote of the Church, did publickly, in their Name, Admonish Rebecca Stephenson by briefly setting forth the Heinousness of her Sins, the Grief caused to the Chh, & the great Dishonor thereby brôt upon God & Religion — & Exhorted her to sincere Repentance & Reformation — which, being suitably manifested by proper Fruits, the Church promise to restore her to their Christian Charity & Communion.
Pub Admonition of Mrs Reb Stephenson
June 24th Lords day Evening, Notifyd the Church of their Semiannual Meeting, to be held on Thursday next in the Meetinghouse, immediately after the public, Sacramental Lecture — & the Contribution for the poor, to be, as usual, the Lords day following.
Thursday June 28th 1798. The Church met accordingly, after the Lecture — and entered upon the Consideration of Subjects, relative to Discipline, agreably to the Design of the Meeting. — The first Object of their Attention & Deliberation, was, the unhappy & awful Case of Jesse Churchill who still remains a Member, thô suspended from the Communion, of of this Church, for disorderly & unchristian Behavior. See Pages 187, 8, 9, &c.67 Upon his removing from this Town to Harvard, it was hoped that in his retired State, he would have time for reflection upon his past Conduct, & would be brôt to a proper Sense of his Sins & to Repentance & Reformation— Accordingly this Chh have waited, in such hope, for almost two years, in which time, he has once & again visited this Place — but no appearance has he given of such Repentance & Reformation, but much the Contrary, by open, & contemptuous Speeches of this Chh, & its Members, individually — & Also by his obstinate Continuance in the Practice of extravagant & intemperate Use of Strong Drink — And now, being in this place, (where he has remained several Weeks) his Intemperance,68 Profane Language & other Enormities have appeared to the whole place in general, to be worse than before — & althô several of this Chh, & others, have reasond & expostulated with him, to endeavor to convince him of the wickedness & Danger of the way he is in, Yet all has been [22469] to no purpose — These things being taken, at this Meeting, into serious Consideration by the Church — They did, at length, view it to be a Duty which they owe to God — to the Honor of Christ to the Interest of Religion, as well as to the Offender himself, & to wipe off, & prevent further Reproach being cast upon Religion & this Chh, on his Account, now to excommunicate & cut off the said Jesse Churchill from all visible Relation to this Chh & the visible Kingdom of Christ — And accordingly after serious Conversation, & full Deliberation on the Subject They passed the following, Solemn Vote, at a full Chh Meeting, & without one dissenting Voice —viz — that
Vote: Whereas Jesse Churchill, who for many years has been a Member of this Church, has been guilty of a long Course of Conduct & Behavior, utterly unbecoming70 the Christian Character & contrary to his own Covenant Engagements, particularly by rash & profane Language — contemptuous treatment of the Church — & the inordinate use of Strong Drink, & many other things, inconsistent with the Character of a Professor of Religion — from71 all which Sins, this Church has repeatedly & very often, for years, endeavor’d to reclaim him — & have used all those Means, pointed out in the Gospel, to bring him to Repentance, & all to no good purpose, And wheras they have, (as in Duty bound,) waited on him, with great Patience & Forbearance, hoping that time & Reflection might bring him to a Sense of his Sin & his Duty, & produce a Reformation in him, but finding that he appears to be more & more obstinate & hardened in his vicious Courses, Therefore this Church, believing, that by continuing him any longer, as a Member of it, they would incur Sin upon themselves, & thereby expose themselves to the Anger of God, & be in danger of his Judgments, do now, by a Solemn & united Vote, exclude the said Jesse Churchill from all Relation to & Communion with this Chh of Christ, & declare him to be no longer a Member of the Visible Church & Kingdom of Christ — and this Act of ye Chh [22572] is founded upon the word of God, & is done in Obedience (225 to his Command) — which says (speaking of incorrigible Offenders) “Withdraw from them” — & have no fellowship with them — But “let him be unto thee, as an heathen man & a publican.” — And as this solemn Sentence of Exclusion, is founded on the Word of God — so it is conformable to the Rule, Custom & Platform of the Congregational Churches in the Land — from the Days of our Ancestors. May the God of all Mercy, follow this solemn transaction with his Blessing — make it a Means of Repentance & Recovery to the Excluded73 Person — & a warning to all — especially to Professors of Religion, that they may hear & fear — & avoid those Sins, & the very Beginnings of them, which are followd with such awful Consequences to the Backslider & Impenitent!
The Chh, after this, at the same meeting, took the Case of our Sister Rebecca Stephenson under Consideration — (See Page 21974) She having sent in her Confession, it was read to the Brethren, but, some of them, not being fully satisfyd as to the Fruits of her Repentance being sufficiently manifested — it was agreed that the Determination on her Case, be postponed for a time.
Lord’s Day July 1st 1798. At the Close of divine Service in the Afternoon, agreably to the Desire of the Church, & in Conformity to the Rules of the Churches, in such Cases, as appears in the Platform of Chh Discipline, owned by the Congregational Churches in this Land — The Pastor did publickly make known the Case of Jesse Churchill (See the foregoing Page75) & the Vote of the Church Excommunicating said Churchill from their fellowship — stating the Grounds thereof, by reading to the Congregation the Substance of their transactions, last Thursday— And then, the Pastor, (sd Churchill, being absent, thô directed by the Pastor in writing, to attend on the occasion) did solemnly Declare the Sentence of Excommunication, in the following words— [agreable to the form in Dr Mather’s Ratio Disciplinæ, or form of the Discipline, used in the New England Churches.]76 Vizt
And now, in the Name of the glorious Lord Jesus Christ, & with the Concurrence of his Church & faithful People, I [22677] I do declare (you) Jesse Churchill, having by (your) his Sin procured it, to be cut off from all the Priviledges and Expectations of such as are in Covenant with the Churches of God. I declare (you) him to belong visibly to the sinful & woful Kingdom of Satan, the Ruler of the Darkness of this World. I declare (you) him to be a Person, from whom Christians, the followers of our holy Lord are to “withdraw themselves, as from one that walks disorderly.” And this just Sentence, now passed upon [you]78 him, by the Church in the Name & by the Authority of Christ, is but a Prelude & Representation of a Sentence, far more dreadful to be passed upon (you) him, in the Day, when the Lord Jesus Christ shall come to judge the world, Except it be prevented by a seasonable Repentance— which, may our gracious God, of his infinite Mercy bestow upon him (you) — for which, let us pour out our Prayers to God on this solemn & mournfull Occasion!
Upon this, Prayer was offered up to God, that this last Step of Discipline, may be blessed as a Means of bringing the Excommunicated, to Repentance, & that “his Spirit may be saved in the Day of the Lord”!
During this Transaction in public, a great & awful Solemnity appeared in the Congregation, with many Tears. May it be sanctifyd for the Good of us all — & May those who think they stand take heed lest they fall, & may all who name the Name of Christ, work79 out their Salvation with fear & Trembling — & fear, lest a Promise being left of entering into his Rest, they shod seem to come short of it!80
