APPARATUS

Note on the Text: This edition is a diplomatic—i.e. uncorrected—reprint of the original copies in the Harvard Archives (1723 Catalogue) and the Houghton Library (1773 and 1790 Catalogues). Their images were digitalized (in color) by Boston Photoimaging Inc., and reduced to black and white by the Harvard University Printing Office. Since the originals, especially the 1723 Catalogue, exhibited both faint inking and print-through, missing or illegible letters and words were then “cloned”, as recorded in the apparatus below. Lemmata are presented in roman (whatever their original font), with “cloned” letters and figures in italic. The result should probably be regarded as a “remastering” of the originals, rather than as a “facsimile”, but all actual errors, if legible, have been left unchanged, or if illegible, have been restored. Deletions of print-through, ms. additions and other irrelevant background “noise” are not recorded.

1723 Catalogue

Reference is by page and shelf-mark; note that shelf-marks may themselves contain “cloned” restorations.
